Whangarei News
Welcome
New Harbour Bridge in Whangarei
Our new sign has been noticed by many locals and we think it is a big improvement. We stilll have many things we need to do and it will happen, little by little.
Hopefully Unit 6 will be up and running in the beginning of the new year after a complete refurbishment.
The next big thing will be new tv's for all units so we are ready when we go digital by the end of the year. That should also provide us with the full range of freeview channels and not just the 8 we have at the moment.
Victoria Bridge Market
15.09.11
The new market on Victoria Bridge on Saturdays from 9am till 3 pm is proving to be a very popular activity for locals as well as tourists. Local artists display their work and food stalls offer delicacies to munch on. The distinctive sails over the bridge provide shelter for sun and rain and at night they are lit up with coloured lights and become almost sculptural.
Unimpresed locals have been hears to call them "The Flying Nun-hats" :-)
Work on the new harbour bridge has begun
Work on the new harbour bridge began on November 28th. It is scheduled to be finished in August 2013 and will be a 265 m long draw-bridge to alllow yachts to pass. It will have a clearance of 6 m at high tide and larger yachts will have to make phone contact to get the bridge raised. For us here at the Marina court it will mean less traffic in front of the motel. At the same time it will mean easy access for people going to Onerahi and Whangarei Heads, as no motel is closer to those destinations than us.
We will keep you posted on the progress.
The Hub Information Centre
15.09.11
Whangarei ! Love it here! The old information centre has been moved from Clapham's Clocks to the newly renovated building called The Hub. It is still at the Town Basin but now has road frontage so it is easily found. I love the sculpture of a giant puriri moth next to the entrance.
The Hub Information Centre offers all services from booking accommodation and activities to a friendly chat about what a family on a budget can do in the area.
It is pick up and drop off point for The Naked Bus and tour busses.
The building also houses the Serenity Cafe, the Kauri Clock Factory shop and public toilets.
Marina Court Peg Inspector
At Marina Court we sun-dry our linen whenever it is possible. It gives that lovely fresh smell. All clothes pegs are individually inspected by our 2 resident Peg Inspectors who takes their work very seriously.
Do you need a vehicle?
There is a new car hire provider in town. Northern Car Hire will give you a really good deal, free kms AND insurance is included in the price . Check them out on northerncarhire.co.nz
On the website you will also find a trip-planner with some great information.
So, what's with these geese....?
These 2 female geese have made the waterfront by Marina Court their home and have lived here for more than 10 years. Boaties from all over the world know their tap-tap- tapping on the side of the boat, as an insistent enquiry about what food might be available.
We have had to discourage them from going onto our lawn as they became so possessive of it that we could not move outside without them carrying on. It sounded like goose-murder every time someone walked by.
It seems that now we have an arrangement that says they live by the water and we live in the house and it suits us very well!
Claphams Clocks
The poppies has been replaced with pansies and zinnias, and it will look great for the summer.
Don't forget to go and visit if you are in Whangarei. Clock museum sounds dusty and boring, but it is such a fun collection and it appeals to all ages...even if you don't know anything about clocks. The shop in the museum also has some unique gifts if that is what you are looking for.
October 12th 2011 OK ..I know it its not really news, but the poppies in front of Clapham's Clocks on the Town Basin still looks spectacular!
By the way, did you know Claphams Clock's has a great shop with not only clocks and watches, but also really nice gifts and souvenirs?
More news coming soon ...
New walkways along the harbour. The visitor to Whangarei will notice that many things are happening to make our city attractive to the visitor.
Much of this is for the Rugby World cup games, but it is here to stay for all to enjoy.
What excites us most here at Marina Court is the harbour side walkway being extended. It will follow the harbour and pass right in front of the motel on the waterside. It will include a small bridge across the stream and enable people to walk right into Fraser Park without having to go onto the road. This walk will eventually link up with the new harbour crossing a few hundred meters down the road and will form an approximately 4 km round trip harbour side walk. e visitor to Whangarei will notice that many things are happening to make our city attractive to the visitor. The walk from Town basin to the sculpture "The Waka and the Wave" ( across from Marina Court ) has been redone and now features a lovely walkway and a sculpture park.
Much of this will be for the Rugby World cup games, but it is here to stay for all to enjoy.
